1999 The Beginning A group of university lecturers gathered together in London to discuss an academic project.  They have just completed a project to study the causes and remedies of the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997, and have just completed their thesis.  Now they want to start a big project to study the causes of financial success (or failure) for individuals, companies and governments.  Among the researchers were Prof Dr Christopher Heng from Malaysia.  He roped in his fellow countryman, Dr Andrew Chia, to join in the research project. The vision and aim of CENFIS is to make the practical subject of money available to be taught in schools around the world.  Therefore, research would be directed towards this area and not solely for academic or professional purposes.

2007 Formation of CENFIS The informal research group was formed and named as CENFIS, the Center for Financial Intelligence Studies.  It is a closed group comprising university lecturers and financial writers. CENFIS became the face of financial intelligence.  Dr Andrew Chia was named as one of their writers and their stakeholder for Malaysian operations.
2008 1st book Money Secrets was published.   It was a runaway bestseller.  It became the only bestselling book on personal finance written by a local author at the Popular Bookfest 2009 held at the KLCC Convention Centre.  A lot of email feedback was received and most of the comments were either "...the book is an eye opener" or "I should have read this book much earlier..." Money Secrets contains an introduction to all the seven elements of financial intelligence.  The definition of financial intelligence was introduced on page 60 of the book (revised edition.)

2011 4th book Money Lessons was published. Just like Big Money Big Trouble, Money Lessons is a follow-up book of Money Secrets which outlined all the elements and basic concepts of financial intelligenceideas in real life.  However, the examples and case studies of Money Lessons are taken from rich and poor individuals.
2012 Trade mark protection "Financial Intelligence" is registered as a trade mark with MyIPO (Malaysia Intellectual Property Organisation). This trade mark is applicable to 160 countries under the Berne Convention.  It was a very difficult task because both the words "financial" and "intelligence" are very common generic words.  CENFIS had to submit all the books and materials written by them in order to convince MyIPO that they deserve to own these two words.  With this approval, anyone who wishes to use these two words for book title, seminar or courses will have to obtain consent from CENFIS.
2012 5th book Born to Speak was published. This book is classified under Element 3/7 of financial intelligence - making money.  Good speaking and communication skills can go a long way in helping us make more money, whether as an employee or as an entrepreneur, or even as an investor.

Patent protection is very important for intellectual property such as financial intelligence and all its content.  This prevents not only unauthorised usage; it also protects the integrity of the content from being altered or diluted by unauthorised persons.  For example, CENFIS has its own proprietary definition of the term financial intelligence as well as the definition of the term "investing."

CENFIS METHODOLOGY

THE BEST TIPS

We gather tips from not only the richest in the country, but the richest and most successful people and corporations in the world, with the longest track record.

Although CENFIS is a closed group, we adopt an open approach whereby if we can find someone who is more successful and can provide better advice, we will adopt information from that new source.  We welcome suggestions from the public to convince us that they have better sources of financial intelligence, especially those with longer track records of success.  We currently have a database of more than 700 case studies and financial stories gathered from worldwide sources.  Our database is growing everyday.

For example, we have warned people to stay away from crypto-currencies since the invention of blockchain and Bitcoin in 2009, following the advice of Warren Buffett, former richest man in the world and also known as the greatest investor of all time.

However, recently, we have also accepted the views of Elon Musk who is currently the world's richest man.  He says that he would prefer crypto-currencies over fiat money.

LOCAL WISDOM

CENFIS will accept and allow the financial wisdom, views and strategies of local heroes to be published as part of its financial intelligence content for that country.  These local heroes may be tycoons or business leaders in their community.  From our research, the wisdom and strategies of the richest and most successful people around the world are uncannily similar.

TRANSLATION

CENFIS will translate financial intelligence to as many languages as possible.

BETTER FORMATS

CENFIS will re-package financial intelligence into better formats such as audio or visual for easy consumption, especially by our younger generations in order to facilitate a better learning experience.

PARTIAL LIST OF MONEY PROBLEMS THAT FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN SOLVE
The following are some of the common problems faced by people, corporations and governments everywhere.  Financial intelligence is able to solve these money problems and restore the freedom and pride of the people.
1. Children who grow up not knowing the value of money and the importance of saving and living a frugal life.  These problems will result in poor money habits later in life.
2. School leavers who over-spend money given by parents or from employment, ending up heavily in debt or facing bankruptcy.  Poor saving and spending habits will have long-lasting adverse effects on their life.  For example, their poor credit rating will prevent them from getting a loan to buy a house.
3. Entrepreneurs becoming part of the statistics of businesses that close shop within the first five years of operation.  Statistics from various countries put the figure between 65% and 90%.  Business failures result in a lot of stress for the entrepreneur and may result in things like hypertension or depression and even suicide.  It also results in a great loss of productivity for the country amounting to billions of dollars each year.
4. The poor and middle-class who have little or no savings in their banks to cater for rainy days.  Statistics in Malaysia show that millions of citizens have less than RM1,000 in their account.  This may become a serious problem for some citizens who need cash urgently.  They will be stressed and may get into health problems mentioned earlier.
5. Sports and entertainment celebrities who have poor money management skills may get into debt, get cheated or scammed of their wealth.  Many celebrities have ended up bankrupt.
6. Retirees who are not financially intelligent have been cheated and scammed of their hard-earned wealth.  These crimes are on the rise and more people are becoming victims everyday.
7. Rich people have problems with succession and distribution of wealth to their beneficiaries.  This has often resulted in court battles among family members, and eventually the destruction of wealth when it is passed to less skillful stewards of wealth and businesses.
8. Big corporations go under whenever there is financial turmoil resulting in market crashes involving properties, stocks, currencies and other commodities and financial derivatives.
9. Governments have gone bankrupt due to bad governance.  Usually corruption is involved, resulting in high national debt and depreciation of their currency.
